Stand With Women and Families

More women than ever are working outside the home, heading households, and leading in the workplace, but structural inequity and outdated workplace policies continue to leave women of color, immigrant women and women working in low wage jobs vulnerable to deportation, discrimination and economic insecurity.

Instead of policies that guarantee that all women have full and fair opportunities to succeed and take care of their families, too many politicians focus on limiting reproductive rights and protecting a rigged system that boosts Wall Street profits at the expense of women and their families.

Florida women deserve fair treatment in the workplace, safe and clean communities, and quality health care including the full range of reproductive options. It’s time for all women have the opportunity to be equal partners in the new economy so families can thrive. Elected leaders at every level must pick a side:

STAND WITH WOMEN BY TAKING ACTION TO INCREASE FAIRNESS, OPPORTUNITY AND FREEDOM... OR STAND IN THE WAY.

STAND WITH FLORIDA WOMEN & FAMILIES

STAND IN THE WAY

PROTECT FREEDOM TO MAKE FAMILY DECISIONS

To have or not to have children is the most important personal, health, and economic decision most women will make in their lifetime. All women need guaranteed access to the full range of reproductive health services, including abortion, to make the best decisions about their families. Elected leaders must STAND WITH WOMEN by protecting and increasing access to reproductive health care, including no-cost birth control in the ACA, abortion, pregnancy and maternity care and must reject efforts to interfere, coerce, punish or criminalize pregnant and parenting women.

PUNISH, DENY & PUT WOMEN AT RISK

Although Americans support legal abortion, politicians keep pushing extreme policies to deny women reproductive health options. Refusal to expand Medicaid jeopardizes women’s health by making birth control and abortion expensive, inaccessible, or even making abortion a crime. Attacks on Planned Parenthood put many women’s only source of health care at risk, particularly rural women and women of color. Officials who attack ACA, Medicaid and PPFA funding STAND IN THE WAY of women’s basic freedom to make decisions about their own health care, their economic security, and what’s right for their families.

PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO EVERY GENERATION

For women to care for their families, they need access to quality, affordable health care to take of themselves. The ACA stopped discrimination based on gender and pre-existing conditions, expanded health insurance, made preventive care free and created millions of new jobs. Efforts to repeal the ACA, stall implementation, block grant Medicaid and turn Medicare over to Wall Street would take health care away from families, hurt state budgets and put the insurance companies back in charge. Lawmakers must STAND WITH WOMEN by opposing federal cuts to ACA, Medicaid and Medicare and expand quality, affordable health care so that women can care for themselves and their families.

STALL OR ATTACK HEALTHCARE FOR WOMEN

Florida politicians including Governor Rick Scott led the charge to overturn the ACA and then delay implementation, holding up health care for hundreds of thousands of Florida women. Rather than addressing critical issues like health disparities for women and families of color, the spread of Zika and the growing mental illness epidemic, Republicans made repeal of the ACA, cuts to Medicaid and Medicare vouchers their top priorities. Lawmakers who attack health care or refuse to take action on critical health issues, particularly those impacting poor families and those led by women of color STAND IN THE WAY of our families’ and our country’s good health and economic security.

SUPPORT FAIR & EQUAL WORKPLACES

Although women are half the workforce today, rampant discrimination remains. Women’s salaries are lower than men in the same job, especially women of color and immigrant women concentrated in the lowest wage jobs. Women need higher wages, paid family leave policies, earned sick days, flexible work schedules and affordable child-care programs so they can keep their jobs and take care of families. Our elected leaders should STAND WITH WOMEN by requiring businesses to adopt responsible leave policies, to increase wages, and to stop discrimination, harassment, and maternity penalties that punish women for taking care of their families and continue to leave women behind in the economy.

ALLOW ANTIQUATED, DISCRIMANATORY WORK POLICIES

The most profitable and fastest growing industries in the US including fast food, restaurants, health care and domestic work don’t pay women enough to take care of their children and families even working full time. Yet many politicians focus on protecting Wall Street profits, denying women health care and passing pre-emption to stop local communities from increasing wages, passing sick leave and paid leave policies in cities and counties rather than on addressing the urgent needs of working women and their families. Elected leaders who protect and promote corporate profits instead of working women and families STAND IN THE WAY a better future for all of us.

INSIST ON A CLEAN PLANET

We all deserve fresh air, clean water and a safe environment free from toxins and pollution that hurt health and destroy our planet. Low income women and women of color are more likely to live in communities disproportionately impacted by climate change, global warming and environmental hazards, increasing the risk for diseases like Zika and diminishing their families health and quality of life. Elected leaders must STAND WITH WOMEN by protecting our planet, holding polluters accountable and responsibly managing resources, climate and wildlife so women can raise healthy families.

IGNORE THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON US

Too many politicians support policies that promote profits for the sugar, fuel and energy industries but destroy land, wildlife, and water in our state. Poor and people of color communities bear the brunt of increasing temperatures and climate change that create the conditions for epidemics like Zika, that poison air, streets and water in our communities. Politicians who ignore climate change and environmental justice STAND IN THE WAY of women and families, particularly in communities of color, where they are most impacted.

ENSURE SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS FOR OUR FAMILIES

Limited investment in jobs and schools, growing poverty and addiction, and the ready availability of weapons makes too many of our neighborhoods dangerous places to raise a family. Poor, disadvantaged or high crime neighborhoods deserve the same commitment from law enforcement, public officials and community leaders to protect families as more affluent or suburban communities get. It’s time for police, elected representatives and community leaders to STAND WITH WOMEN for policies that ensure that every community is treated with respect and that all our families are protected from violence in workplaces, schools, businesses, public places and our own streets.

ENDANGER OUR FAMILIES & COMMUNITIES

Lack of sensible gun control rules; particularly assault weapons, makes violence more likely in our homes, streets and schools. Yet even after Florida’s Pulse mass shooting tragedy lawmakers have done little to ensure more safety for LGBT, immigrant, people of color and other communities. Women and their families remain at risk for gun violence whether from terrorists, from neighbors, or from law enforcement officials themselves. Politicians who refuse to insist on accountability for hate crimes, racial profiling, and the commitment of resources to all communities for increased safety and improved quality of life STAND IN THE WAY of a better future for all our families.
